How do I help my child choose books to read?
Book choice is an important aspect of reading for students. It is important that children have access to a wide variety of books that differ by subject, topic, and genre that interest them. In addition to selecting texts that interest them, it helps children to be matched with books that are "just right" for their current reading level and ability some of the time. In Charleston County School District teachers match children with books that are on their instructional level for classroom instruction and independent level for practice outside the classroom. The books are just challenging enough that by reading and practicing them, your child becomes a better reader. The books that our teachers use are labeled with a reading level (letters A-Z). For parents visiting the library or a bookstore, finding books on the correct reading level for their child can be tricky. This web page will provide you with additional information pertaining to book selection and the appropriate use of leveled text.
